What to Do

There is a host of activities around Ballymaloe and Cork – here are just a few suggestions.

Ballymaloe House

Ballymaloe House has a great range of activities on the grounds – everything from tennis or swimming to baking brown bread. Just take a look at the list here.

Ballymaloe Cookery School

On the estate at Ballymaloe is the famous Ballymaloe Cookery School. Cookery demonstrations take place most weekday afternoons.

Cork City

Cork City is a short drive from Ballymaloe. It’s Ireland’s second city (though don’t tell the locals) and you can happily spend a day seeing the sights there. The English Market in particular is a highlight, with lots of fresh food.

Blarney

Who hasn’t dreamed of kissing the Blarney Stone? Blarney is less than an hour’s drive from Ballymaloe and Blarney Castle is open every day.

Kinsale

Known as a gourmet destination, the town of Kinsale makes a nice day trip for a walk by the sea and a good meal.

Golf

There is some great golf around Cork. Old Head is a challenging course, with amazing scenery, less than an hour away.

Closer to Ballymaloe, Castlemartyr Resort, Fota Island Resort and Harbour Point Golf Club are all options.

The Ring of Cork

Cork has decided to copy Kerry, and is promoting the Ring of Cork. It’s not as picturesque as the Ring of Kerry (as anyone who’s visited Kenmare knows), but they have a good website with activities.

Ballycotton

If you are staying in Ballycotton, you can take a tour of Ballycotton Lighthouse (it’s on an island, so only for those with sea legs!)
